Grants and Funding for the Early Literacy Program
I am an AmeriCorps member serving at the Early Literacy Progra of Orange County. Our book budget was recently slashed and we're looking for grants, funding and sponsorships to purchase quality children's books to provide to children in low income communities in Orange County, CA. If anyone knows of organizations, corporation or foundation that fund early litreacy that would be a big help. Thank you!

Have you checked the library's page on Grant Wrangler? We list resources for libraries and many of them are free. You can also search on Grant Wrangler in the categories of literacy and free stuff. The Lisa Libraries grant might be able to help too.

Hi Christina, I believe the Barbara Bush Foundation gives away books to organizations helping low income children. Also, Dollar General has some literacy grants that would probably work - not sure if the application is available yet or not, but their website should give some insight to this. Good luck!

Thank you for your response. Our program has applied for the Barbara Bush Foundation grant two years in a row with no luck. They offer national funding and I'm sure get quite a bit of applicants. I will look into the Dollar General grants. Thank you.

Hi, Christina. I know of several. Start with First Book and Reach Out and Read. They are both on Facebook, but check their websites, too. I find that LIKING a page on Facebook leads me to more resources when I can see what other organizations my favorite agencies also like and are connected to.
Another great resource is your local library system. I am on the board of the Friends of the Houston Public Library, and I volunteer in our book warehouse. When libraries cull their collections, they often sell them to the public for a very low cost ($1-$2 per book, as we do in Houston) through their own operations or through a local nonprofit "Friends" group. You can get some beautiful books, many almost new or only gently used, for next to nothing. And I'll bet if you sent some people in to volunteer, they'd even GIVE you some books. In my organization, we are OVERFLOWING with children's books, and I regularly donate to schools and churches, daycares and shelters. In Orange County, you should have plenty of options. Good luck!

Barbara Bush's grant program is VERY competitive. Unless you are an established literacy agency, give up.

Thanks for the information Jan. Our program is connect to Friends of the Fountain Valley Library, but that is just one of many libraries in the area. I should look into establsihing a relationships with additional local libraries. We received books from Friends of Fountain Valley for free but they are often times pretty warn books. We appreciat them and there are many great title included, but a large number are also books which we may not be able to use.
